Willmott Dixon has been appointed by Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for Luton and Dunstable University Hospital’s Emergency Department tender. It comprises of a £14.5m extension and refurbishment, which includes developing a new main entrance into the hospital. Procured by the SCAPE framework, it will offer a new drop off area for visitors, another CT scanning department together with remodelling and landscaping of external spaces outside the main entrance.

Delivery in a live environment will be of importance to the programme, with the works taking place while the current Emergency Department is operational. Being part of the initial works, Willmott Dixon has developed an internal link tunnel which patients and staff can safely use to move around the hospital buildings.

Luton and Dunstable University Hospital extension part of wider redevelopment


The Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, deputy director of redevelopment, Melanie Banks stated, “The extension and redevelopment of the Emergency Department at the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital is key step forward on a planned journey to redevelop the area. The scheme provides much needed area and facilities for patients, whilst allowing staff continued delivery of high quality care. “In addition, Luton and Dunstable University Hospital scheme enables advancements in technology and further gives the way to a more sustainable future.”

London & East region, managing director of Willmott Dixon’s, Chris Tredget added, “We’re happy to be partnering with Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust on extension and refurbishment of the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital’s Emergency Department. Upon completion, it will offer better accessibility and critical facilities that will help grow healthcare for the local community.”

The project marks Willmott Dixon’s latest in healthcare. The company is also on site in Dunstable at Chiltern Vale Integrated Health and Care Hub, constructing a cutting edge £43m combined healthcare and a better facility for Conselho Central de Bedfordshire. The project on Luton and Dunstable University Hospital is set to complete in late 2022.
